Brotato DLC at a glance
Both expansions are listed on the Brotato Steam page at $3.99 each. They add a new map with its own waves of enemies and bosses, plus new characters, weapons and items. You can switch between maps when starting a run.
Free updates arrive alongside the DLCs. The four-player local co-op update was free, as were New Dawn, Paws & Claws and All Pain No Gain. You do not need any DLC to enjoy those.
- Abyssal Terrors: first DLC, deep-sea theme, $3.99 on Steam
- Primal Dread: second DLC, prehistoric jungle theme, $3.99 on Steam
Abyssal Terrors: the deep-sea expansion
Blobfish announced Abyssal Terrors in April 2024 together with a free local co-op update. It takes the game's roguelike action into the deep sea of an alien planet. The announcement promised 20 new waves of enemies and bosses, more than 10 characters, more than 10 weapons and more than 30 items.
Its map is called the Abyss, while the original map is Crash Zone. Owning it changes the Nightmare unlock, letting your ten Danger 5 wins count across different maps. All Pain No Gain also added a random starting map option for its owners.
Abyssal Terrors on consoles
Abyssal Terrors is sold on consoles as well, including a Brotato & Abyssal Terrors bundle on Xbox and Nintendo stores. Console versions arrived later than PC. Check your platform's store for the current price.
A PS5 review from PlayStation Country describes it as adding many new characters, a heap of new items, a whole new arena and a new gameplay mechanic. Brotato's console and mobile versions usually receive new content after PC. New Dawn, for example, reached consoles and mobile about a month after its PC launch.
Primal Dread: the dinosaur expansion
Primal Dread was announced in April 2026 and released on PC through Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG on November 2, 2026. Evil Empire, which now develops Brotato, made it. The official trailer calls it the biggest addition since Abyssal Terrors came out more than two years earlier.
You venture into an alien jungle to fight dinosaurs. Packs of dinosaurs stampede through the undergrowth, flying dinosaurs attack from above, and holes act as a new environmental hazard. Coverage describes 20 waves of new enemies, elites and bosses.
The Evolution stat: Mecha or Mutant
Primal Dread adds an Evolution stat that makes enemies stronger while giving you extra power. You push it in one of two directions by picking up the matching drops on the map. Each path changes both your bonuses and how enemies look and attack.
The Mecha path lets you evolve weapons with Mecha parts and dismantle Mecha weapons in the shop for more parts. Mecha dinosaurs shoot lasers and leave slowing oil puddles. The Mutant path can randomly copy your items to multiply their effects, while mutant dinosaurs spread acid.
Primal Dread characters and content
The DLC adds 10 new characters, 17 weapons, more than 30 items and 3 Pets. The launch trailer highlights Time Shifter, who slows everything except themself after taking a hit. It also shows Veteran, a one-potato army facing swarms, and Archaeologist, who digs crates from dig sites.
Pets were introduced in the free Paws & Claws update, so the new Pets build on that system. The trailer says the DLC also hides more movie references in its weapons and items. New music tracks and achievements are included too.
Release on consoles and mobile
Primal Dread launched on PC first. According to the release date trailer and Gematsu's report, console and mobile versions are planned for early 2027. No exact console date has been announced yet.
This follows the pattern of earlier updates. New Dawn reached consoles and mobile about a month after PC. Keep an eye on official Evil Empire channels for the console date.
Free updates between DLCs
Between the two DLCs, Evil Empire released three free updates. New Dawn added item bans, the Codex and save slots. Paws & Claws added Pets and Beast Master, and All Pain No Gain added Nightmare.
These free updates work for everyone, with or without DLC. Owning Abyssal Terrors adds extra options, such as random map selection. See Brotato New Dawn update for details.
Which DLC to buy first
Abyssal Terrors is the better first pick if you plan to chase Nightmare, because it lets wins on different maps count toward the unlock. It also adds a random map option with All Pain No Gain. It has been available longer, so guides cover it well.
Primal Dread is the better pick if you want the newest systems. Its Mecha and Mutant Evolution paths change how runs play. Both DLCs cost the same on Steam.
Are the DLCs worth it?
If you enjoy Brotato, both DLCs add a new map and a large batch of characters for a low price. Abyssal Terrors also makes it easier to unlock Nightmare by letting wins count across maps. Primal Dread adds the most mechanically different system so far with Evolution.
New players can start with the base game and add DLC later. See the Brotato guide to learn the basics first. The Brotato characters page covers DLC potatoes.
