Brotato at a glance

Brotato was developed and published by Blobfish. It launched in Early Access on Steam on September 27, 2022 and left Early Access on June 23, 2023. Wikipedia classifies it as a top-down shoot 'em up roguelike.

On Steam the game holds an Overwhelmingly Positive rating, with 96% positive English reviews. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and it is also available on consoles and mobile. Ongoing updates are now handled by the studio Evil Empire.

Core mechanics

You control a potato that can wield up to six weapons at once. Weapons fire automatically by default, with an optional manual aiming mode. Runs last under 30 minutes and waves last 20 to 90 seconds.

Killed enemies drop materials, which give experience and act as money in the shop between waves. Each weapon belongs to one or two classes, and stacking a class grants set bonuses. Items are permanent buffs and debuffs, and many have trade-offs that shape your build.

Damage generally starts from a weapon's base damage, adds the stats it scales with, and is then multiplied by your percent damage, while attack speed controls how often it hits. Some weapons scale with unusual stats such as Max HP, Elemental Damage or level. Engineering damage powers turrets and other structures rather than the weapon swings themselves.

The in-game Codex

The New Dawn update added a Codex, a wiki-style menu inside the game. It covers items, weapons and enemies, including kill counts and how often an enemy killed you. The progress menu also moved inside it.

The Paws & Claws update later added schematics for every Elite attack to the Codex. For quick in-run checks, the Codex is now the fastest and most up-to-date reference. It also reflects the exact version you are playing.

The community Brotato Wiki

The largest English fan wiki lives at brotato.wiki.spellsandguns.com and is written and maintained by players. It has pages for characters, weapons, items, enemies, the shop and every patch. Its shop page is the best source for reroll costs and tier schedules.

Creators often recommend it, but they also warn that pages can lag behind the latest update. If a number in a guide disagrees with your game, trust the in-game Codex and the official patch notes first. This site links back to the sources we checked on every page.

Major updates and DLC

Abyssal Terrors was the first paid DLC, an underwater expansion announced in April 2024 alongside free four-player local co-op. New Dawn (version 1.1.13.0, October 2025) added six items, the Vorpal Sword, item bans, save slots and the Codex. Paws & Claws (February 2026) added Pets and the Beast Master character.

All Pain No Gain (May 2026) added the Nightmare difficulty, the Wounded character and the Rail Gun. The second DLC, Primal Dread, launched on PC on November 2, 2026 with a jungle map, dinosaurs and ten new characters. See Brotato DLC and Brotato New Dawn update for details.

Characters, weapons and items

Characters change your starting stats, weapons and shop odds, and most unlock through play. Weapons come in classes with set bonuses and in four rarity tiers from Common to Legendary. Items are permanent buffs and debuffs that define your build.

Free updates added unusual characters such as Beast Master, who fights only with Pets, and Wounded, who dies in one hit. DLC adds more characters, weapons and items on new maps. See Brotato characters for the full picture.

Difficulty levels

Brotato has several Danger levels, and many players treat Danger 5 as the standard challenge. Winning on Danger 3 or higher unlocks the item Ban system. Ten Danger 5 wins on different characters or maps unlock Nightmare.

Nightmare adds stronger enemies, projectile events and fog waves. Beating it once unlocks the Wounded character. Steam also lists accessibility options that let you adjust enemy health, damage and speed.

Platforms and modes

On PC, Brotato runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and it is Steam Deck Verified according to GamingOnLinux. It is also available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and mobile. Console and mobile versions usually receive updates after PC.

Co-op is local only, for up to four players on one screen. PC players can play online through Steam Remote Play Together. Mods are available through the Steam Workshop.

Who develops Brotato now

Blobfish created and launched Brotato, and the Steam page still lists Blobfish as developer and publisher. The studio Evil Empire now handles its updates and DLC. GamingOnLinux notes that the original developer moved on to other projects.

Evil Empire's first big release was New Dawn in October 2025. It followed with Paws & Claws, All Pain No Gain and the Primal Dread DLC. Official news appears on Steam, Discord and Evil Empire's YouTube channel.
