Brotato Nightmare Guide: How to Unlock and Beat It

Brotato Nightmare is the hardest difficulty, added in the All Pain No Gain update (version 1.1.15) in May 2026. Unlock it by winning Danger 5 ten times on different characters, or different maps if you own Abyssal Terrors. Enemies are stronger and faster, and new projectile and fog events appear.

What Nightmare is

Evil Empire added Nightmare because many players treated Danger 5 as the default way to play. The official devlog says Nightmare is far above Danger 5. Enemies deal more damage, have more health and move faster.

It also adds new enemies, new events and a new bestiary. The patch notes list 16 new enemies, six for Crash Zone and ten for the Abyss. These are tougher versions of existing foes.

How to unlock Nightmare

You must win Danger 5 at least ten times. The wins must come from different characters, or from different maps if you own Abyssal Terrors. A difficulty menu panel now explains how to unlock harder modes.

The fastest route is to rotate strong characters on Danger 5. Use our Brotato tier list and Brotato best build pages to pick reliable winners. Knight, Bull and Doctor are common choices for easy clears.

Projectile events

During some Nightmare waves, environmental projectiles fly across the map for the entire wave. The arrow shape of each bullet shows the path it will take. Over time these bullets get faster and more numerous.

Learn the patterns and keep moving. A creator notes that even strong Ranger runs can be lost by walking into two projectiles. An accessibility option lets you disable, enable or amplify projectile fire on this difficulty.

Fog events

Fog darkens the map during certain waves, with light only around your potato. The patch notes place it in waves 5 to 7, 10 to 12 and 16 to 18. Your structures and Pets also light up the area.

Fire helps, and explosions briefly light up the fog. Visibility also depends on your equipped items. Builds with turrets, Pets or burning damage can see more of the map.

The Wounded character

Winning one Nightmare run with any character unlocks Wounded. The devlog calls it the ultimate glass cannon, starting with more Harvesting and speed but dying in one hit. It starts with a Tardigrade, giving you one extra chance.

Wounded starts with Well Rounded stats. Health and regeneration items are removed from its shops and crates, so the run is all about damage and dodging. Each character that beats Nightmare also gets a special frame on the selection screen.

The Rail Gun

Winning any difficulty with Wounded unlocks the Rail Gun. Its damage grows every five seconds you avoid taking a hit, and it resets each wave. It is also a starting weapon for 13 characters.

The weapon suits careful players who can avoid damage for long stretches. It pairs naturally with Wounded's one-hit rule. All Pain No Gain also buffed many other weapons to help with early waves and Nightmare.

Best characters for Nightmare

Cephalopocalypse's 2026 Nightmare tier list ranks characters by how easy they make a win. Well Rounded, Crazy and Mage are in S tier, with Mage boosted by the strong Icicle weapon. Ranger is A tier because projectiles can end its runs quickly.

The video's key advice is that ranged weapons are generally much easier than melee on Nightmare. Enemies have more health, so staying at a distance keeps you alive. Experienced players can still win with Demon and Bull.

  • S tier: Well Rounded, Crazy, Mage
  • A tier: Ranger
  • Prefer ranged weapons over melee

Quality-of-life changes in the same update

All Pain No Gain also added a random zone option for Abyssal Terrors owners. Death messages now show what killed your character. A difficulty panel explains how to unlock harder modes.

Many weapons were buffed, including Knife, Sword, Hammer, Minigun, Potato Gun, Plank and Warhammer. Hatchet's base attack speed was reduced. Kraken Eye and Pile of Books were also adjusted.

Is Nightmare worth it?

Nightmare is built for experienced players who find Danger 5 routine. The devlog openly warns that you will lose over and over. Those who enjoy a steep challenge get new enemies, events and a character to unlock.

If Danger 5 still feels hard, keep practicing there first. Every Danger 5 win on a new character brings you closer to the unlock. Nightmare will be waiting when you are ready.

New enemies in Nightmare

Nightmare introduces buffed-up versions of existing enemies. The devlog calls them meaner and more dangerous versions of their weaker siblings. The patch notes count 16 new enemies across Crash Zone and the Abyss.

A new bestiary tracks them. Use the Codex to learn their attacks between runs. Elite attack schematics, added in Paws & Claws, help too.

Tips to survive Nightmare

Prioritize Max HP, regeneration and dodge earlier than on Danger 5. Bring light sources such as fire, turrets or Pets for fog waves. Watch the arrows on projectile waves and stay mobile.

Death messages now show what killed you, so use them to learn. Expect many losses at first, since the devlog warns you will lose over and over. Each win adds a frame to that character, so track your progress.
