What is included in Primal Dread?
The official launch overview lists 20 waves on a new map, 10 characters, 17 weapons and 40 items. The Jungle introduces dinosaur enemies, elites and bosses, alongside music and achievements. The launch post also describes three new Pets.
Steam requires the base game and lists the expansion at US$3.99 when checked on November 5. Regional prices and discounts can differ. Compare the two expansions in our Brotato DLC guide.
Mecha or Mutant: how Evolution changes a run
Evolution is a tradeoff: pickups strengthen your build while changing the enemies you face. The two directions offer different rewards and hazards, so the choice is about how your current run can use those rewards.
Mecha parts let you improve weapons with extra stats. Dismantling mechanized weapons in the shop returns parts. Mecha enemies gain laser attacks and leave oil that slows movement.
The Mutant path can randomly duplicate items, multiplying their effects. Mutant enemies bring acid hazards. Random duplication makes its payoff less predictable than selecting a weapon improvement.
Our practical approach: inspect your strongest weapon and your inventory before investing. A weapon-centered run gives you a clear place to spend Mecha parts; an inventory with useful repeatable effects makes Mutation interesting. Neither path is a guaranteed win.
New characters to try
The developer highlights Time Shifter, who slows the world after taking a hit while continuing to move normally; Veteran, themed around surviving enemy swarms; and Archeologist, who digs up crates. These are examples from the launch announcement, rather than a ranking of all ten newcomers.
Start with a familiar difficulty to learn the Jungle hazards before combining a new character, a new map and Nightmare. That is our learning recommendation, not an unlock requirement.
Primal Dread on PS5, Xbox, Switch and mobile
The official PR briefing gives an early-2027 window for PS4 and PS5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, and iOS and Android. It does not give an exact day for each platform. The PC launch date should not be read as a console release date.
If you searched for “Brotato Primal Dread PS5”, check the DLC listing for your platform before buying. A base-game or Abyssal Terrors listing is a different product. This page was checked on November 5, 2026; we have not verified console pricing or simultaneous release across those platforms.
Which changes are free?
Item Set, Nightmare balance changes and buffs to older characters belong to the free 1.2 update. Buying Primal Dread adds the Jungle expansion content; it is not required just to use the Item Set menu.
The Brotato patch notes summary separates the 1.2 release from the 1.2.0.1 hotfix, including the Survivor co-op fix and the change to Mutagen drops.
Before your first Jungle run
Update the game, disable outdated mods, and check Item Set on the character-selection screen if expected content is missing. The developers specifically warn that old mods can conflict with the update.
Use the build guide to plan damage and defenses, then adjust for the Jungle. Existing Danger 5 recommendations are starting points; they are not tested Primal Dread character rankings.
