How Pets work
Paws & Claws added Pets as a new type of item you equip during runs. The update launched with nine pets: Mouse, Bonk Dog, Catling Gun, Bot-O-Mine, Blazemander, Doc Moth, Lootworm, Jellyshield and Scapegoat. Each one has its own unlock method, so you collect them across several runs.
The update also added a pet transparency option and a Pets and Turrets highlight option, useful when the screen gets crowded. Primal Dread later added three more Pets; see our Primal Dread guide. You can disable Paws & Claws content with Item Set if you want runs without Pets.
How to unlock Beast Master
Unlock these five pets; the other four are not required for the character.
- Bonk Dog: equip six weapons that scale with Melee Damage.
- Catling Gun: equip six weapons that scale with Ranged Damage.
- Bot-O-Mine: equip six weapons that scale with Engineering.
- Blazemander: equip six weapons that scale with Elemental Damage.
- Lootworm: end a wave with at least 20 materials still on the ground.
Tips for a first Beast Master win
Beast Master does not buy weapons, so every material goes into pets, stats and items. Our editorial advice: decide early which damage stat your pets scale with, and avoid spreading purchases across every stat. Winning a run with Beast Master on any map unlocks the Scapegoat achievement.
Beast Master's exact stats can change between patches, so check the character-selection screen before applying an older video. For other unlock goals, see our unlocks guide.
